Dustin Poirier Still Intrigued By Potential Nate Diaz Fight
Dustin Poirier admits he still finds a showdown with Nate Diaz appealing.
Poirier and Diaz were supposed to compete back in November 2018. A hip injury knocked Poirier off the bout sheet and the fight was never rescheduled. Both men have traded barbs on social media since their bout fell apart.
Speaking to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Poirier said he remains intrigued by a potential matchup against Diaz although he feels it doesn’t make sense (h/t BJPenn.com).
“It is exciting, it is fun. Those are the kind of fights I want to be part of. Fights that are exciting to me and that I’m motivated to get up and bust my ass every day. That is exciting. That is a guy I grew up watching, a guy who is still a very big name, that’s it.
“I think the fans would be in for a great fight if that one happens. Does it make sense in the lightweight division? No. Does it make sense where I am at, standing in the door front of a title shot? No. But, it is a fun fight and this is entertainment and this is fighting.”
Poirier is coming off a massive victory over Conor McGregor in their rematch. “The Diamond” stopped McGregor in the second round via TKO. The lightweight clash headlined UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi. Many believe Poirier is now in the driver’s seat for a UFC Lightweight Championship opportunity.
As for Diaz, he hasn’t competed since November 2019. He suffered a third-round TKO loss to Jorge Masvidal for the one-time-only BMF Championship.
