Duva Confirms Kovalev-Canelo Offer
Sergey Kovalev’s promoter has admitted that her fighter wants to face Canelo Alvarez, but Kathy Duva made it clear Golden Boy Promotions needs to move fast.
“Sergey is on the brink of signing to fight his mandatory against Anthony Yarde in August,” Duva told Sky Sports. “Very little time remains to make a deal for the ‘Canelo’ fight in September.
“Golden Boy made an offer for a September ‘Canelo’ fight just a few hours ago. I don’t know if, at this point, enough time remains to make this rather complicated deal in the few hours that remain.”
“Callum Smith has got to fight in September,” said Smith’s trainer Joe Gallagher, who has been a back-up option to both Kovalev and Gennadiy Golovkin.
“You either give us a date, we’ve got to be ready, either it’s in America or it’s in the UK, but we want a fight on that date, and we want to fight again in December. It’s time to get Callum going.”
And while Smith may be ready to “get going,” the super middleweight has been considered for a fight with Billy Joe Saunders, and Alvarez may not get the chance to face the Liverpudlian, as DAZN executive chairman John Skipper seems only interested in Kovalev or GGG as options for Alvarez on September 14th.
