Dwayne Johnson Reacts To The Smashing Machine’s Poor Boxing Office Opening
Despite “The Smashing Machine” earning under $6 million in its opening weekend, which was the poorest opening weekend of Dwayne Johnson’s career, The Rock responded with nothing but thanks and gratitude for those who showed up to the theaters to watch the film.
The movie, which portrays the life and career of former UFC Heavyweight Champ Kerr, earned rave reviews from its showing at the Venice Film Festival earning a 15-minute standing ovation, which brought Johnson to tears. Johnson’s performance has had many believing he could even receive an Oscar nomination. The Rock was clear about the challenges he faced during filming, including putting on over 30 pounds of muscle, injuring his shoulder and taking a ‘real punch.’ Dana White praised Johnson’s performance, saying ‘the movie is incredible, I’m happy for him. He’s finally gonna get the credit for his acting skills.’
The film, which currently has a 72% fresh critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 77% audience score, was on track to be one of the biggest openings for A24. However, it underwhelmed coming in at third place bringing in just $5.9 million. The good news is that the net $50m production may only lose $10-$15 million. A24 plans to campaign during the awards season for the film and Johnson had nothing but positive words following the film’s theatrical release.
