Eddie Alvarez Reacts To DQ Loss At ONE On TNT 1

Eddie Alvarez has given his response to his controversial disqualification loss to Iuri Lapicus.

Alvarez went one-on-one with Lapicus on April 7. The bout was featured on the ONE on TNT 1 card. Alvarez was hoping to capitalize off the momentum of his submission win over Eduard Folayang. It wasn’t meant to be as Alvarez was disqualified due to punches to the back of the head in round one.

The DQ call drew criticism from fight fans as the general consensus was that Alvarez’s strikes to the back of the head weren’t intentional. It also appeared that Lapicus was turning his head, causing Alvarez to land punches in the illegal area.

Speaking to reporters following the bout, Alvarez expressed his belief that he shouldn’t have been disqualified (h/t MMAFighting.com).

“I went back to my room and I was able to watch the clip of the fight and see everything and it was a bad call on the referee’s side. The American media is in uproar right now and so are the American fans. I’m going to respectfully ask them to look back at the video and reverse that call.

“All that matters is Iuri’s safety. That’s it right now. That he’s going to be OK. When I go back, I’m in the cage, so emotions run high. The referee, people make bad decisions when emotions run high. I think it was a bad call. I’m mixed emotions right now.”
