Eddie Hearn Agrees With Billy Joe Saunders Corner Stoppage Against Canelo
Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn says he feels Billy Joe Saunders’ corner saved him from further punishment against Canelo Alvarez.
Saunders went one-on-one with Canelo in the main event of a Matchroom card this past Saturday night, May 8. Four super-middleweight titles were at stake. In the end, it was Canelo who extended his winning streak to seven, although he hasn’t been beaten since September 2013. Canelo has gone 14-0-1 since that lone defeat to Floyd Mayweather.
Canelo earned the win thanks to a punch that caused an eye injury to Saunders. The former WBO Champion ended up suffering a quadripod fracture, which requires surgery.
During a chat with the folks at iFL TV, Hearn expressed his belief that had Saunders made it to the ninth round, things would’ve gotten worse (h/t Pundit Arena).
“You could see as soon as he hit him that he’d done his eye socket. I think because he couldn’t see, the next round was going to be a bad situation. I think he would have got badly hurt in that round.
“He’s going to be out for a long, long time. But he’s a world-class fighter who lost to the pound-for-pound number one. He’s a two-weight world champion.
“If he wants to carry on there’s some big fights out there for him. He may feel he has got to a stage where he’s been there, he’s done it, he’s seen it all. We’ll back him 100 percent.”
