Eddie Hearn: Billy Joe Saunders Is Tougher For Canelo Than Caleb Plant
Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn feels Billy Joe Saunders poses a bigger threat to Canelo Alvarez than Caleb Plant.
Saunders is the WBO Super-Middleweight Champion. Canelo holds the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring gold. The two are expected to collide on May 8 with all titles being up for grabs.
Plant is the IBF Super-Middleweight Champion. He is the final roadblock to the winner of Canelo vs. Saunders in terms of unifying all the major 168-pound gold.
Speaking to BoxingScene.com, Hearn expressed his belief that Saunders would give Canelo a tougher fight than Plant could.
“I think it’s a really tough fight. I was actually watching the fight there tonight, thinking about that fight, and thinking about the movement of Billy Joe. Do you know what I mean? Canelo, he has good feet, but Billy is gonna be spinning out everywhere. I actually think it’s gonna take [Alvarez] a long time to get a hold of him.
“I think it’s by far the toughest fight for Canelo in the division, a tougher fight than Caleb Plant, because Billy’s fast and he’s got better foot movement and speed than Plant. Plant is a good fighter, but I just feel that Saunders is definitely the toughest fight for him in the division.”
Canelo is coming off a dominant title defense over Avni Yildirim. He scored a third-round TKO victory to maintain his hold on the gold. It was Canelo’s first successful defense of his titles.
As for Saunders, his last fight took place back in December 2020. He successfully retained his WBO Championship against John Ryder. Plant defended his IBF Title against Caleb Truax, taking a unanimous decision victory.
