Eddie Hearn: Golden Boy Knows Ryan Garcia Isn’t Ready For Gervonta Davis
Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn believes Golden Boy Promotions feels Ryan Garcia isn’t ready to fight Gervonta Davis.
Garcia has made it clear that he hopes to fight “Tank” Davis next. “KingRy” is fresh off an interim WBC Lightweight Title win over Luke Campbell. Garcia had to battle through adversity in the second stanza when he was knocked down for the first time in his pro boxing career. Garcia didn’t miss a beat, however, and knocked out Campbell with a body shot in the seventh round.
During a war of words over the phone, Davis insisted that had he been the one to land that punch on Garcia, “KingRy” would’ve been out cold. Garcia has been predicting a knockout win over “Tank” inside two rounds.
Chatting on Boxing Social, Hearn expressed his belief that Oscar De La Hoya and co. don’t feel confident in Garcia’s ability to defeat Davis at this time (via BoxingScene.com).
“Hopefully, [it’s] Devin Haney, which [Garcia] doesn’t seem to want to talk about. It is going to be mandated by the WBC. You can’t criticize Ryan Garcia for swerving Devin Haney. He’s calling out Tank Davis. Oscar De La Hoya, Robert Diaz, Eric Gomez, they know boxing, and they know that was a big risk fighting Luke Campbell. In the second round, [when Garcia was knocked down] they were probably thinking, ‘Oh my life, what’s going on here?’ But they also know that Ryan Garcia isn’t ready for Tank.”
Davis is coming off a highlight-reel knockout over Leo Santa Cruz. The undefeated “Tank” regained the WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight gold in the victory, while also retaining the WBA (Regular) Lightweight Championship.
