Eddie Hearn: I Believe Devin Haney Is The Best Lightweight In The World
Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn thinks that Devin Haney is the best 135-pounder in the world but he needs a big fight.
Haney is the WBC Lightweight Champion but some have disputed whether or not he’s a real titleholder. That’s because Teofimo Lopez has the “Franchise” version of the WBC gold along with the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and The Ring Titles. Lopez has referred to Haney as an “email champion.”
Speaking to Boxing Social, Hearn said that Haney must get that signature to prove to the public that he is indeed the true king at lightweight (via BoxingScene.com).
“There were a lot of unanswered questions about Devin Haney. I believe Devin Haney is the best 135-pounder in the world, but he has to prove it. And this is the frustrating thing to Devin because he wants [the big fights]. Don’t forget that he went down the WBC to fight [Vasiliy] Lomachenko to become his mandatory, and now we need that breakout fight.”
Lopez has said that talks to fight his mandatory challenger, George Kambosos, appear to be falling apart. Kambosos has denied this but Lopez claims it’s onto talks with Hearn about possibly fighting Haney. Both Lopez and Haney have traded barbs, so bad blood is brewing.
Haney is coming off a successful WBC Lightweight Title defense over Yuriorkis Gamboa. “The Dream” cruised to a unanimous decision victory. Some feel the performance wasn’t as impressive as Lopez’s win over Vasiliy Lomachenko, Gervonta Davis’ knockout over Leo Santa Cruz, and Ryan Garcia’s knockout win over Luke Campbell. Still, Haney insists that he wants a big fight to prove that he is the gold standard at 135 pounds.
