Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn likes the idea of a “double matchup” between Francis Ngannou and Dillian Whyte.
Ngannou is the newly-minted UFC Heavyweight Champion. He captured the gold by defeating Stipe Miocic via second-round knockout in their rematch. Ngannou avenged his 2018 loss to Miocic.
Hearn made an appearance on SiriusXM and DAZN’s The Ak & Barak Show. During his appearance, the Matchroom director said he once attempted to book Ngannou vs. Whyte but the UFC put a halt to that plan (via BoxingScene.com).
“I love Francis Ngannou. We almost had a presser with Dillian Whyte and him, but the UFC shut that down after we taped it. We do have the footage, though. I would love to see a double matchup with Ngannou and Dillian Whyte. One in the cage and one out of it. Ditto for [Katie] Taylor and [Amanda] Nunes.”
Hearn went on to say that even Anthony Joshua could be a possible opponent for Ngannou down the line.
“AJ wants to be the best, but he also wants to do different things once he meets his goals. So a fight with Francis Ngannou isn’t impossible. Just like Katie Taylor vs Cyborg or Nunes, potentially.”
Whyte is coming off a fourth-round TKO victory over Alexander Povetkin. This was a rematch from their August 2020 encounter, which Whyte lost. Now that he’s avenged the loss, Whyte is once again the interim WBC Heavyweight Champion. He has called for a showdown with Deontay Wilder as he will need to wait for Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury to play out before he can cash in on a main WBC Title opportunity.
