Eddie Hearn Insists Canelo vs. Caleb Plant Won’t Be Difficult To Book

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn believes Canelo Alvarez will have no issue getting a fight with Caleb Plant.

Canelo has fulfilled his two-fight deal with Matchroom. He had a one-off with the promotion for his December 2020 bout with Callum Smith. He then signed a two-fight deal, defeating Avni Yildirim and Billy Joe Saunders in that span. Canelo isn’t tied down to any network and will likely be going after IBF Super-Middleweight Champion Plant, who is signed with PBC.

Speaking to reporters during the Canelo vs. Saunders post-fight press conference, Hearn said he doesn’t expect an undisputed title fight between WBA, WBC, WBO, and The Ring Champion Canelo and Plant to be a hassle to book (h/t BoxingScene.com).

“[It’s] not complicated. It’s the beauty of Canelo’s decision to be a network free agent. So, it stops politics, it stops anything from getting in the way. The numbers on DAZN tonight were absolutely astronomical. They’re gonna have to and they will make a huge offer for that fight. FOX will also make a huge offer for that fight.

“But he’s, you know, he’s free to make the fights that he wants to make, where he wants those fights to happen. So, for me, I think it’s a very straightforward process. I think that process should start immediately, and I don’t see any complications with his position.”

As far as whether or not Canelo will want to work with Matchroom more in the future, Hearn said it’s up to the Mexican star.

“That’s a conversation obviously to be had with Saul. I mean, obviously, we had a two-fight deal. It’s been the most incredible experience. I think we’ve done a great job. We all work very well together. Hopefully, we can continue the relationship for a long time.”
