Matchroom boxing’s Eddie Hearn is doubling-down on his desire to have bouts with boxers and cage fighters together.
On an Instagram Live session, Hearn talked about a potential fight between UFC heavyweight contender Francis Ngannou and interim WBC Heavyweight Champion Dillian Whyte. Whyte has called out Ngannou to face him, calling him a coward. Ngannou has expressed a desire to fight in a boxing ring down the line, and has made sure to dismiss Whyte. Hearn is looking to meet with UFC President Dana White to discuss a clash, comparing it to Conor McGregor v. Floyd Mayweather.
It is possible something like this can happen again. There are some logistical issues Hearn has to figure out, however.
“Ngannou v. Whyte, the only thing is do we go in the cage, or do we go in the ring? Apparently Ngannou wants it in the ring, though,” Hearn stated.
Hearn and White are almost similar when it comes to how they run a business. In fact, Hearn has complimented White and has stated that what Matchroom does is a style the UFC perfected.
As far as a future collaboration between the two, Hearn is interested in what Ngannou said about fighting Whyte inside a cage. Whyte would also be interested in fighting in a cage and a ring. The idea, and the possibility of teaming with White, gave Hearn some motivation to think of a specific cross-promotional tactic.
“I thought maybe me and Dana (White) could put this night together where you got a ring that also transforms into a cage between match-ups,” Hearn went on to say. “So you got a crossover, but you’ve got an MMA fighter against a boxer in the ring, and you’ve got a boxer fighting an MMA fighter in the cage.”
Can you see Dana White and Eddie Hearn teaming up one of these days?
