Eddie Hearn Praises Caleb Plant But Feels He Isn’t Ready For Canelo Alvarez
Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn has respect for Caleb Plant but thinks he should take a big fight before facing Canelo Alvarez.
Plant is fresh off a successful IBF Super-Middleweight Title defense against Caleb Truax. Plant earned the unanimous decision victory. “Sweethands” feels a showdown with Canelo is bound to happen.
Hearn appeared on SiriusXM and DAZN’s The Ak & Barak Show and expressed his belief that Plant should mix it up with David Benavidez before going one-on-one with Canelo (via BoxingScene.com).
“I actually think he’s a fantastic fighter, but let’s be honest – his resume is really, really poor – really poor. But it’s not his fault and it’s not because he doesn’t have the capability to beat top, top 168-pounders. He’s just not fighting [top] 168-pounders. So, like, in an ideal world, as a fan, I would love to see Caleb Plant against David Benavidez, you know, in May.
“And then, you know, whoever is the belt-holder fights Canelo Alvarez. I just hope that he doesn’t sit tight until that fight, you know, because I feel like that’s gonna be a huge fight, but it could be so much bigger if he takes the right steps and fights the right opponents, because he’s a great talent.”
Canelo is scheduled to put his WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring Super-Middleweight Titles on the line against Avni Yildirim on February 27. If he is successful in that bout, then he’ll meet Billy Joe Saunders in May. As for Plant, fight fans are left to wonder if he’ll wait for Canelo’s next two bouts or if he will take another fight.
