Eddie Hearn Responds To Teofimo Lopez’s ‘Silver Spoon’ Remark

Eddie Hearn has reacted to Teofimo Lopez’s remarks that DAZN won’t be involved in boxing within five years by questioning the fighter’s commercial value.

The ‘Takeover’ is a two-time unified and two-time lineal champion, but the success has not always resonated with the fans by way of ticket sales. Following Lopez’s win over Josh Taylor to secure the WBO belt at 140, the boxer announced his retirement by confirming he would only return to the sport for nine-figure paydays. Thereafter, Lopez retracted his remarks as he sought the biggest fights available.

The American had fought on DAZN on one occasion when he faced George Kambosos Jr. The latter secured an upset victory as Lopez hit out at DAZN and questioned the result. That displeasure towards the network resulted in Lopez recently hitting out at DAZN.

“Like I said.. no more than 5 years! It’s going to happen whether you sterling silver spoon feed shmuck likes it or not,” Lopez

And how Hearn has responded by questioning the value that Lopez places on himself.

“We know your gate. You crept over the line to sell out the [Hula] theater [at Madison Square Garden in New York] against Kambosos [on November 27, 2021] with 4,000. It was my show.. If you want to say, ‘That’s because you promoted it, and it was on DAZN.

“When you boxed Josh Taylor at the same arena [on June 10, 2023], you couldn’t sell it out. So, we know how many tickets you’re going to sell. If you look at the revenue in the park, we can make you an offer. On what planet do you live on if you think that offer should be three or four or five times bigger than what it is? From where do you think this money comes from? That’s the frustrating thing about these conversations,” Hearn

Showtime’s exit from boxing will ultimately reshape the way the sport moves forward. And whether that gives fighters more power is anyone’s guess. However, there must be a balance between giving fighters the purses that they desire and their market value.
