Eddie Hearn Reveals What Could Be Next For Billy Joe Saunders

Billy Joe Saunders could have a return date set.

Saunders last competed back on November 9, 2019. He knocked out Marcelo Esteban Coceres in the 11th round to retain the WBO Super-Middleweight Championship. The win moved Saunders’ pro boxing record to 29-0. It was his 14th victory via knockout.

Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn recently revealed that Saunders could be making his return on December 5, which is the same date as Errol Spence Jr. vs. Danny Garcia, Ryan Garcia vs. Luke Campbell, and a potential heavyweight title fight featuring Tyson Fury.

Hearn had previously listed potential opponents for Saunders during an interview with talkSPORT.

“[Fedor] Chudinov, Martin Murray, Rocky Fielding? John Ryder would be a great fight, I’m not sure that’ll happen. I think John will take his WBA final eliminator shot. People are always gonna moan, so I’d rather a Brit got the opportunity, especially at this time when travel restrictions are in place and we can make things a lot easier. And you can get a Brit who can go out and try and win a world title by beating Billy Joe Saunders.”

Saunders had been linked to a showdown with Canelo Alvarez but it appears we’re a long way from that happening. Saunders was hoping for a higher purse to fight boxing’s top star. At the moment, Canelo is involved in a lawsuit with DAZN, Golden Boy Promotions, and Oscar De La Hoya.

Whether it’s Martin Murray or Rocky Fielding who gets the call, Saunders is likely to be a heavy favorite. While Murray and Fielding are respectable competitors inside the ring, they have lost in marquee fights. The big losses for Murray came against Sergio Martinez and Gennadiy Golovkin. Fielding’s defeats came at the hands of Callum Smith and Canelo.
