Edgar Berlanga After Extending KO Streak To 16: I Want Rounds
Edgar Berlanga is grabbing all the headlines due to his first-round knockouts but he knows eventually he’ll have to get some rounds in.
Berlanga took on Ulises Sierra on the main card of a Top Rank Boxing event headlined by Shakur Stevenson vs. Toka Kahn Clary. Berlanga was going into his fight against Sierra with 15 straight first-round knockouts. He extended the streak to 16, which means in his pro boxing career, Berlanga has yet to make it to the second round.
Speaking to Bernardo Osuna after the win over Sierra, Berlanga admitted that he hopes to get in some rounds in 2021 (via BoxingScene.com).
“[I want] rounds. The better competition, the better opposition we fight, I believe we’re going to get those rounds in. We ended 2020 with a bang. 2021 is a big year for us, and I’m looking forward to it.”
Berlanga also reflected on being able to pick the brain of his idol Felix “Tito” Trinidad during their meetup before the Sierra fight.
“Tito Trinidad was my idol. He still is. Just being with him opened up my eyes as to what boxing is about, the dedication, the focus, leaving the streets and the bad people alone.”
Many are wondering just how far Berlanga can go in his career. The 23-year-old holds the number six spot on the WBA super-middleweight rankings. He is number eight in the WBO rankings. One has to assume that stiffer competition is on the horizon for Berlanga.
