Edgar Berlanga Goes Off On Billy Joe Saunders Following Loss To Canelo

Edgar Berlanga didn’t have many kind words for Billy Joe Saunders after his title fight with Canelo Alvarez.

Berlanga is a rising super-middleweight. He is a highly-touted prospect who many believe could be the next breakout Puerto Rican star. Berlanga was in attendance inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas for Canelo vs. Saunders.

Canelo won the bout via eighth-round TKO when Saunders didn’t get off his stool for the ninth round. Saunders’ team decided to call a halt to the fight due to an eye injury. As it turns out, Saunders suffered a quadripod fracture, which requires surgery and he could be out of action for quite a while.

Berlanga made it clear to Little Giant Boxing that he thinks Saunders took the easy way out (via BoxingScene.com).

“[Expletive]. That was bad, Even if you were losing the fight at least go out with a bang. You’re in front of 73,000 people. It’s sad that it had to end like that. It is what it is.

“I don’t agree with it. There’s girls out there, guys out there that go out with their eyes (swollen shut), I don’t understand it, man. It’s bad for business.”

Canelo vs. Saunders was a world title fight. Four championships were on the line. Canelo put the WBA, WBC, and The Ring Super-Middleweight Titles up for grabs, while Saunders’ WBO gold was at stake.

With the victory over Saunders, Canelo is now just one title away from being recognized as the undisputed super-middleweight king. Standing in his way is IBF Champion Caleb Plant.
