Ellerbe: We Welcome the UFC to Boxing
The UFC got into the boxing scene this year when its lightweight champion, Conor McGregor, faced off with Floyd Mayweather in the Money Fight. Since this fight, the future of McGregor in the UFC and boxing is unknown.
But the UFC may not be done with boxing. UFC President Dana White has stated that he is interested in staging boxing events, and he even has applied to obtain a boxing promoter’s license.
White has claimed many boxing promoters are lining up to try to partner with the UFC, and while there are plenty of skeptics on if the UFC can succeed in promoting boxing, they have one noted supporter. Mayweather Promotions President Leonard Ellerbe worked with the UFC during the lead-up to the co-promoted Money Fight, and he tells Boxing Scene that the UFC can be a success in the sport.
“Dana and [UFC owner] Ari [Emanuel] are very smart guys and they have a wonderful organization. They put on great events and they have a number of great athletes. If they want to try their hand in boxing we welcome them. They wouldn’t want to do it if they didn’t think they could do it at the highest level. I am confident that if they came across the street and wanted to get into boxing they would excel in it and that is great for the sport. The more the merrier,”
