Emanuel Navarrete Set To Face Oscar Valdez On August 12

Emanuel Navarrete is set to defend his WBO junior lightweight title against Oscar Valdez on August 12th, 2023, at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

The all-Mexican clash promises to be a fierce rivalry, given the nature of the two fighters.

Navarrete, who is a former three-division champion, won his first world championship by overcoming Isaac Dogboe in 2018 to claim the WBO junior featherweight title.

Further titles at featherweight and then junior lightweight followed with victories over Ruben Villa and Liam Wilson, respectively.

In contrast, Valdez is a two-division champion, winning the WBO featherweight title in 2016 by beating Matias Rueda. Another title followed at junior lightweight with a win over Miguel Berchelt.

While he did fall short against Shakur Stevenson in a title unification, Valdez will be hoping to equal Navarrete’s record of being a three-division champion moving forward.

Reaction

“After so much time, this fight will finally take place. Obviously, I am 100 percent motivated because Valdez is still a big threat, and a fight against him could possibly be the start of a new Mexico vs. Mexico rivalry like the one between Barrera and Morales,” Navarrete

“I’m excited to return to the ring, especially because it’s for a world title against ‘Vaquero’ Navarrete. Being a world champion is something that I always dreamed of. I already did it two times, and this is yet another opportunity. So, I’m excited and prepared both mentally and physically for this new opportunity. And I like that it’s between two Mexicans because it’s a win-win for Mexico. It’s a guaranteed war when there are two Mexicans in the ring,” Valdez
