Ennis vs. Kelly Unification Fight Reportedly Nearly Finalized
A three-belt junior middleweight unification fight between Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis (36-0, 32 KOs) and Josh Kelly (19-1-1, 9 KOs) is moving closer, with Kelly’s trainer Adam Booth confirming his fighter has agreed terms for the proposed matchup.
Ennis holds the WBA and WBO championships at 154 pounds, while Kelly brings the IBF title into the contest. The winner would leave with three of the division’s four major world championships.
“We’ve agreed all the terms,” Booth said. “And apparently, from what I’ve been told, so has Boots. We’re just waiting for the date.”
Booth’s comments indicate Kelly’s side has completed negotiations, although an official agreement and fight date have yet to be announced.
Ennis claimed his two championships by stopping previously unbeaten Xander Zayas in the seventh round on June 27. Kelly won the IBF title with a majority decision over Bakhram Murtazaliev on January 31, before successfully defending it against Caoimhín Agyarko by unanimous decision on July 25.
State Farm Arena in Atlanta has previously been identified as the expected venue, with late November or December under consideration.
