Erislandy Lara Retains WBA Title Against Greg Vendetti

The WBA (Regular) Light-Middleweight Title fight between Erislandy Lara and Greg Vendetti has concluded.

The title bout took place inside the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. Lara was looking for his first successful title defense in his current reign. Meanwhile for Vendetti, he was vying for a Rocky Balboa moment with a major upset and gold on his mantle.

In the early going, Vendetti attempted to work inside. Lara’s plan was to use his counter-punching skills and keep his distance. Vendetti was eating jabs on his way inside but he appeared to be unfazed.

Lara stung Vendetti with a straight punch early in the fourth round. Vendetti gathered himself quickly but he appeared to be a bit more cautious when trying to close the distance. Lara continued to showcase his defense in the fifth round but Vendetti’s heart was also on full display.

Early in the seventh round, Vendetti moved in and let his hands fly but Lara’s defense stayed true. He returned fire on his opponent with uppercuts. Vendetti landed an uppercut of his own. A right hook from Lara pierced the guard of Vendetti. Lara was finding a home for the left uppercut.

The bout ended up going the distance and Lara was awarded the unanimous decision victory with scores of 116-112, 117-111, and 117-111.
