Errol Spence Jr. Doubles Down On Wanting Higher Purse For Terence Crawford Fight
Errol Spence Jr. insists that he needs the higher purse in order to fight Terence Crawford.
Both Spence and Crawford are undefeated champions. Fight fans have been clamoring for a title clash between the two. Spence holds the WBC and IBF Welterweight Titles, while Crawford is the WBO Champion.
Spence competes for PBC, while Crawford fights under Top Rank Boxing. While PBC and Top Rank have co-promoted in the past, money is the main holdup with Spence and Crawford. Spence feels he’s the clear A-side and wants a significantly higher purse than Crawford.
Speaking to DAZN’s Chris Mannix during the Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith broadcast, Spence said Crawford would have to take any purse split that Al Haymon offers him if he wants the fight (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“I think it could happen. We have to see how it goes. Al Haymon and Bob Arum need to sit down, and for Bob to stop lying. We’ll see. It definitely could happen next year. We just have to sit down and talk and go over the numbers and things like that. I’m the big dog in the welterweight division. He has to take a back seat and take that 60-40 or 70-30. Whatever we give him … Like I said, I can go up to 160 and fight Canelo Alvarez.”
Crawford took to his Twitter account to respond by seemingly closing the door on a possible bout with Spence after those demands.
And they said it was me 🤷🏿♂️ I rest my case now, on to the next. That chapter is now close.
