Errol Spence Jr. Dismantles Yordenis Ugas With Tenth Round Stoppage

With a dominant TKO victory over Yordenis Ugas, Errol Spence Jr. has unified the WBC, IBF, and WBA world titles in the welterweight division. The official stoppage came at 1:44 of the tenth round upon the advice of the ringside physician, due to massive swelling around the right eye of Ugas. Of course, Ugas being the warrior that he is, was not happy about this stoppage and wanted to continue the fight. But, the decision to end things in the tenth was quite justified based on the damage that was inflicted.

The factor that mainly determined the outcome in this wildly entertaining fight was Spence’s ability to utilize his uppercut, mixing it in amongst supremely effective combination punching. Despite taking serious punishment in this bout, Ugas did manage to find success in several rounds with hard, selective punches.

Aside from the short-lived feeling out process that occurred in the first round, this match was packed with extreme action. Spence came in looking to make a statement with his offensive approach, and even while receiving some hard punches returning from Ugas, he showed no signs of hesitation. Through the first four rounds, Spence was the busier fighter with regard to punching output, but Ugas continued to take the center of the ring in an attempt to control the real estate. This side of the Cuban’s game plan changed in the fifth round, when Spence was able to land a hook to the body followed by a hard uppercut that made Ugas stumble back.

In the sixth round, Spence found himself in a bit of trouble after being rocked by an uppercut from Ugas, resulting in his mouth guard being dislodged. In a moment of confusion, Spence thought there was a break in the action to gather the mouthpiece, but this was not the case. Ugas took full advantage of the fact that Spence’s hands were dropped and unloaded a hard right hand behind the jab. Because of Spence’s error in judgement, he took several significant strikes in the following moments, but was ultimately unfazed.

The seventh round is where things truly started to lean towards Spence. He was able to hurt Ugas with another uppercut, followed by a series of combination punches. Ugas started moving backwards as Spence advanced, looking to end the fight and make the statement he set out for. Ugas would escape the round, but by the following, his right eye was nearly shut.

For the remainder of the match, Spence worked very aggressively in search of the finish, finding angles and landing bombs. Ugas was able to come back with some solid shots to the body that were clearly taking a toll on his undefeated opponent, but it was not enough to turn the tide.

In the tenth round, Spence was able to delivered multiple heavy uppercuts in rapid succession. From there, the ringside physician took one last look at the right eye of Ugas, which was all the way swollen shut by this point, and was left with no choice but to put an end to the punishment.

This battle may have seemed one-sided by the final round, but overall it was a very competitive matchup, with a steady back and forth for a good portion of the bout. Additionally, Yordenis Ugas showed an enormous amount of heart and determination to push through the pain caused by his injured eye, and continue to stand in the pocket and throw punches back at Spence.
