Errol Spence Jr Shuts Down Rumors Of Fighting Manny Pacquiao, Relates With Holmes-Ali Mismatch
Spence and Pacquiao were originally scheduled to fight in August 2021 before Spence sustained an eye injury.
The IBF, WBA, and WBC 147-pound champion, Errol Spence Jr. has no interest in fighting Manny Pacquiao.
Spence, 32, is considered one of the most accomplished boxers of the modern era and is just a one-way belt away from becoming a unified champ in the current four-belt era.
The Desoto, Texas kid was well aligned to meet the WBO champ, Terence Crawford at the close of this year, but the negotiations went in the wrong direction, resulting in the postponement of the fight.
Now the three-belt holder is on a hunt for a new opponent before he and the “Bud” get on with it. A familiar name is surfacing in the media, but Spence seems to have zero interest in that matchup.
The former eight-division champ, Manny Pacquiao was in action in an exhibition bout against DK Yoo in Korea. After punishing the Korean Mix Martial Artist in his own backyard, Pacman hinted that he still has a lot left in the engine and is able to compete at the highest level.
The 44-year-old is fascinated with possible combat with either Spence or Crawford in the new coming year.
But Spence is reluctant to enter the ring with the legend at this age, as he feels he will prove too much for Pacman. He compared it with the 1980 heavyweight title bout between Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes as an example where Holmes gave Ali one of the saddest valedictions in sport.
Holmes battered the Great Ali throughout the bout before Ali’s trainer, Angelo Dundee stepped up and called stop to the fight to stop that merciless bloodbath.
“I wouldn’t fight him, I probably wouldn’t fight him,” Spence said of Pacquiao in an interview with ESNews.
“I wouldn’t fight him. Like you can see the stigma that—Larry Holmes is one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. One of the greatest fighters of all time. I feel like he don’t get the respect that he deserves. Or like people just don’t regard him. People really don’t just talk about him.”
