Isaac Cruz def. Giovanni Cabrera – lightweight

Isaac Cruz scored a split-decision win over Giovanni Cabrera in a WBC and WBA lightweight title eliminator.

Cabrera started off well, as the former undefeated fighter used his jab to keep Cruz quiet. In response, the Mexican attempted to land some power punches, but was missing early on.

Cabrera continued his jab in the second, as Cruz failed to close the gap. Cabrera used his height and reach advantage to attack Cruz’s body. However, Cabrera’s holding got a stern warning from the referee.

Cruz increased his output and began to land as his major success occurred in fourth round. A left hook connected on Cabrera’s chin, which rocked the fighter backwards.

Thereafter, Cruz began to find more success as shown in the fifth and sixth round. ‘Pitbull’ landed numerous shots to the head and body.

And the theme continued in the seventh, as Cruz landed the harder punches. Although Cabrera was trading, he merely opened himself up.

Cruz’s momentum, though, was halted in the eight. The 135-pounder lost a point for using his head in the clinch, but Cruz responded by firing more punches in response.

Cabrera, however,  stayed with Cruz as his chin held up. And yet, Cabrera’s nose was bleeding heavily, as ‘Pitbull’ increased the volume of his punches.

Despite landing the more effective punches, the scorecards had a it a lot closer, much to the worry of Cruz who waited for the decision: 114-113, 114-113, and 115-112.
