Eye Surgery Official For ‘Korean Zombie’
After delaying the inevitable, it looks like “The Korean Zombie”” will be out of action until further notice.
Chan Sung Jung told MMAJunkie that he will be indeed undergoing eye surgery. An initial report had Jung (16-5) stating that he was seeing double and he would get surgery done ASAP. He saw a specialist in his home country that stated he didn’t need to get anything performed on. Deciding to get a second opinion, Jung went back to America, where the doctor stated he needed the surgery
“Finally, I decided to get the surgery done in Phoenix soon,” Jung said. “I am sure I will be able to get back to the cage around July or August because the surgeon says it is not a big surgery.”
If he got surgery earlier, he may have been back by May or June. Now it is looking like a late summer return.
Jung is on a two-fight win streak, beating Frankie Edgar via TKO back in December. He is 3-2 in his last five fights, and 3-1 since returning to action from military service in 2017. Ranked fourth in the UFC’s featherweight rankings, Jung is hoping to face new UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski down the line. If the champion is too busy these next few months, Jung has an alternative in mind in Brian Ortega.
“Right now, my focus goes on Volkanovski,” Jung went on to say. “If it would not work for me to fight the champion, I would be interested in fighting Ortega – but I want to make sure. At this moment, I want to fight Volkanovski.”
Ortega might be busy with Zabit Magomedsharipov, which opens the door for a Yair Rodriguez rematch. With time until his next bout, and seeing how well he heals, the landscape of the UFC could be very different by the time “The Korean Zombie” is good to go.
