Fabricio Werdum: I Have No Doubt I Would Submit Jon Jones

Newly-signed PFL heavyweight Fabricio Werdum believes he’d submit Jon Jones if the two were to share the cage.

Jones became the most dominant light heavyweight the UFC has ever seen. After ruling the roost at 205 pounds for many years, Jones vacated the light-heavyweight gold in favor of moving up to the heavyweight division. He has been bulking up to give himself the best chance of having a smooth transition.

During an interview with Sherdog.com, Werdum said he likes his chances if he were to ever get a crack at Jones.

“I believe Jones will be the future UFC heavyweight champion. If I win the PFL heavyweight grand prix, it would be great to finally fight him in a cross-promotion superfight. I have no doubt that if I face Jones in the same shape I fought Gustafsson, I would submit him on the ground.”

Werdum last competed back in July 2020. “Vai Cavalo” took on Jones’ former rival, Alexander Gustafsson. Werdum scored the first-round submission victory via armbar. This was the final fight on Werdum’s UFC deal.

Werdum ended up signing with PFL. He will participate in the 2021 season, which begins in April. In late 2020, PFL President of Fighter Operations, Ray Sefo, explained to FIGHT SPORTS why signing Werdum was the right move.

“When you look at Fabricio’s record and his history, I mean he’s fought everybody and anybody. And when you look at his resume, it speaks for itself. He was the first guy to ever beat Fedor Emelianenko, he’s beaten so many former champions, not only UFC but elsewhere. He was a Strikeforce champion, he was a UFC champion. When we started talking to his manager and his manager was saying that he was really looking for something else and to also get him excited and whatnot and continue fighting, one of my questions to his manager was how well does he feel? In terms of now that he’s 43 years old and how many years does he have left, and Werdum’s answer was, ‘we’ve got four to five good years left in the ring.’ So I’m like, ‘okay let’s do something.’”
