Family Affair: After Valentina Bout, Chookagian Set To Face Antonina Shevchenko
In her last fight, Katlyn Chookagian faced off against UFC Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko. At UFC 247 in February, Valentina won via TKO. Now, “Blonde Fighter” has a chance to exact some revenge when she faces off against her older sister Antonina.
According to MMA Junkie, the two will be competing in a flyweight bout on May 30 in a location to be determined.
Chookagian (13-3) fought hard to earn a title shot against Valentina. She was on a three-fight win streak before Jessica Eye beat her via split decision at UFC 231, earning a shot of her own. The 31-year-old from Pennsylvania then rebounded with unanimous decision wins over Joanna Calderwood and Jennifer Maia.
It is rare to find sisters within the same division. Antonina (8-1) made her debut in the UFC in 2018, beating Jaymee Nievara during Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. In The Ultimate Fighter finale in November of that year she beat Ji Yeon Kim via unanimous decision. Back in April, “La Pantera” lost to Roxanne Modafferi via split decision. She rebounded this past August, beating Lucie Pudolova via rear-naked choke.
Ranked second in the UFC’s flyweight rankings, Chookagian is looking to get back to contention against Antonina, who is ranked twelfth.
The UFC’s APEX Center may be the location of the May 30 event, as the Nevada Commission is still working things out as a result of the coronavirus. The main event of the card is expected to be Tyron Woodley v. Gilbert Burns.
Here is the updated rumored card for the May 30 event:
- Tyron Woodley v. Gilbert Burns
- Katlyn Chookagian v. Antonina Shevchenko
- Tim Elliott vs. Brandon Royval
- Mackenzie Dern v. Hannah Cifers
- Klidson Abreu v. Jamahal Hill
