Ferguson Suffered Orbital Bone Fracture At UFC 249
Despite losing to Justin Gaethje via TKO at UFC 249, Tony Ferguson was a warrior throughout the bout. It looks like “El Cucuy” will be away from the octagon for a while as a result. Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole spoke with UFC President Dana White and it was determined that Ferguson suffered a broken orbital bone.
Inside the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, Ferguson (25-4) and Justin Gaethje went to war for five rounds. During the bout, Ferguson suffered two deep cuts above and below his eyes as a result of Gaethje’s (22-2) vicious left hooks. Still, Ferguson kept on going. It wasn’t until several shots had Ferguson reeling that referee Herb Dean put a stop to the contest at 3:39 into the fifth.
Gaethje ended up throwing 143 significant strikes in the bout, with 100 shots to the head. The TKO-win gave Gaethje the interim UFC Lightweight TItle. As for Ferguson, his twelve-fight win streak dating back to 2013 was snapped. It is unknown what is next for him, considering his path to UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has been halted once again.
Ferguson ended up praising Gaethje after the fight, while also stating he will come back stronger. He also posted a video on social media following his stay at a local medical facility. It was a moment that saw him in good spirits.
