Fielding Open To Showdown With DeGale
Newly-crowned WBA “regular” super middleweight champion Rocky Fielding isn’t willing to defend his title against just anybody, he wants to fight the best names in the division.
Of course, one top name that is available is James DeGale, who recently vacated his IBF title in pursuit of big fights as he is entering what he believes is the end of his career. One such fight would be against Fielding which would be a big fight in the United Kingdom. Fielding told Boxing Scene that there had been discussions of a fight between him and DeGale, but is not sure how much talks have really progressed.
“There have been talks. I was in London last month and I spoke to [promoter] Eddie [Hearn], but he’s the only name that’s been mentioned, really, so I don’t know too much,” Fielding said.
As far as his interest in having a fight with DeGale is concerned, Fielding said he would be up for a fight against the former IBF champion under the condition that Fielding gets paid more as he is the champion and DeGale is the challenger.
“I’d take the fight, that’s fine, I’ve got no problem with fighting DeGale. He’s a good fighter, but I’d have to be paid properly to have it. Eddie said that he was looking for all kinds of money for the fight when it was first mentioned a few weeks back, but all I said to him was: ‘Make sure I get more than him,'” Fielding said.
Fielding won the WBA title earlier this year when he scored TKO win over former champion Tyron Zeuge. The current WBA “super” champion is George Groves, who is fighting Callum Smith for the World Boxing Super Series crown in September in Saudi Arabia.
