Fighting Words: Jessica Eye’s Statement Following UFC on ESPN 10 Loss
Even in defeat, Jessica Eye is cool, calm, and collected.
The number one flyweight contender lost to Cynthia Calvillo this past weekend at UFC on ESPN 10 via unanimous decision. It was a one-sided affair that saw Calvillo land four takedowns and Eye only landing 97 strikes. However, “Evil” managed to hang on and tire the former strawweight out.
Eye dealt with a lot of adversity heading into this bout. She missed weight and appeared to be on the verge of falling at certain points, per her own words. This came after Eye said she thought Calvillo might have issues in a new division. With a 2-1 record in three fights, she was also criticized for being in the main event of a card on ESPN. Still, she held on and did her job.
Eye took to Instagram to share her emotions and the fact that she has no regrets.
“I am never ashamed of myself no matter what the outcome is in a fight in the octagon. I am beyond Thankful for every moment that I have whether it’s good or bad. I am grateful for the support and even more for the critical a**holes that’s seem to just have nothing better to do but to be a menace. Thank you @ufc.”
Following a three-fight win streak, Eye lost to UFC Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 238. She rebounded with a win over Viviane Araujo before the Calvillo bout. Since returning to flyweight in 2018, Eye has a 4-2 record.
It is unknown what is next for Eye, who may take a big dip off the UFC’s flyweight standings following her loss.
