Fighting Words: Mikaela Mayer Sends A Message To Terri Harper
Gaining national recognition just a few weeks ago, Mikaela Mayer is looking to take advantage. She will be keeping a close eye on another fight featuring two top stars.
Mayer (13-0) has put WBC and IBO Super-Featherweight Champion Terri Harper on her radar. The latter is set to defend her titles against Natasha Jonas in the middle of the “Matchroom Fight Camp” series (for a recap of that fight, check out the attached link). Mayer wants to get the opportunity she believes she deserves against Harper.
“There’s no hard feelings towards her,” Mayer told Sky Sports. “I just want to fight her, kick her a** and take her belt!
“If I were to fight her? I would take her out of that comfort zone that she is in, and take it to her.”
We can debate lingo all we want but we all know @terriharper96 will have to come to America to fight me if she wants to truly build her career. #espn @trboxing

Mayer made her professional debut in 2017. A 2012 Olympic runner-up, Mayer won the NABF Super-Featherweight Title in 2018 against Vanessa Bradford. She has defended the title three times. Mayer ended up becoming one of the first active competitors to test positive for the coronavirus, having to back out of her June fight against Helen Joseph. She ended up facing Joseph in the main event of a Top Rank card after Jamel Herring tested positive twice for COVID-19.
During the fight, Mayer impressed, earning a unanimous decision win. According to CompuBox, Mayer landed 195 of 538 punches, while Joseph landed 86 of 377. After the fight, Bob Arum stated her next fight would be for a title.
Mayer has also called Harper one-dimensional. Harper (10-0-1) signed a promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing in 2019, making her debut against Viviane Obenauf that November. She beat Obenauf via unanimous decision to retain the IBO Super-Featherweight Title she won from Nozipho Bell. In the biggest fight of her career so far, Harper beat Eva Wahlstrom this February to win the WBC Super-Featherweight Title.
Harper’s future goals are to fight in America and face Mayer. There may be an issue with a potential matchup, as Matchroom has signed champion Ewa Brodnicka. Eddie Hearn believes she is in line for a unification bout against the winner of Harper and Jonas. Mayer is not a fan of being pushed to the back of the line.
