Fighting Words: What Does Israel Adesanya Think About Khamzat Chimaev?
Israel Adesanya has taken issue with Khamzat Chimaev’s recent comments.
Adesanya is the reigning UFC Middleweight Champion. He’s set for his second title defense this Saturday, September 26. He’ll collide with Paulo Costa. While Adesanya isn’t thinking about fighting a prospect right now, he’s got one who is breathing down his neck.
Chimaev has made a big splash in a short period of time in the UFC. He has competed as a welterweight and middleweight. He recently told reporters that he thinks he can take out UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman and Adesanya.
Speaking to Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, Adesanya let it be known that he isn’t impressed by Chimaev (via MMAMania.com).
“I don’t even know the guy, I haven’t seen his fights yet,” Adesanya told Kevin Iole. “I saw the presser and he was just talking shit. He was just casting his net. Have you seen him fight? Rat lip? Meh … Tim said he fought low-level competition. So he thinks I’m an easy fight … that’s interesting. I mean, everyone does this when they’re coming up, casting the net wide. Yeah, keep casting.”
Under the UFC banner, Chimaev has beaten Gerald Meerschaert, Rhys McKee, and John Phillips. All victories have been finishes. In his last outing, Chimaev knocked out Meerschaert with one punch in 17 seconds.
Many believe the UFC has attached the rocket ship to Chimaev as he’s on the fast track up the middleweight ladder. White already had plans to book Chimaev against Demian Maia in Abu Dhabi but the UFC boss is considering giving Chimaev another fight first.
As for Adesanya, his bout with Costa will serve as the UFC 253 main event. It’ll take place on Yas Island. It’s a rare MMA title fight with two undefeated fighters going head-to-head.
