Floyd Mayweather Has High Expectations For Davis vs. Santa Cruz PPV Buys

Floyd Mayweather believes the sky’s the limit when it comes to Gervonta Davis vs. Leo Santa Cruz.

Mayweather is a big supporter of Davis. The two have sparred together and Davis is signed under Mayweather Promotions. “Tank” is set to put his WBA (Regular) Lightweight Title on the line against Cruz on October 31. Davis will also be going after Cruz’s WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight Championship. The bout will be held inside the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. It’ll headline a Showtime Boxing pay-per-view.

During a virtual press conference, Mayweather shared his belief that Davis vs. Cruz could exceed expectations as far as PPV buys are concerned (h/t BoxingScene.com).

“When I fought Arturo Gatti, we didn’t have social media. We didn’t have the different social media outlets. I was pushing and promoting the first PPV, and we did some pretty decent numbers. I think we did over 300,000, maybe close to 400,000 homes the first time out. These two guys can probably beat that. The reason they can beat that is, like I said before, it’s totally different now.

“Hopefully we can get one million buys, even two million PPV buys. Anything is possible, with the different outlets we didn’t have back in that time. Both of these guys deserve to be on PPV. I’m not here to knock their skills. I want both of these guys to continue pushing it so that we can do record-breaking numbers.”

Davis is perfect in his pro boxing career thus far. He’s amassed a record of 23-0 with 22 knockouts. Cruz has only suffered one loss in his career and that was to Carl Frampton. He avenged the lone defeat in thei rematch.
