Floyd Mayweather Heaps Praise On Gervonta Davis’ Technical Skills
Floyd Mayweather believes people underestimate the technical boxing skills of Gervonta Davis.
Davis is scheduled to collide with Leo Santa Cruz in a title bout this Saturday night, October 29. Davis’ WBA (Regular) Lightweight Title and Cruz’s WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight Championship will be on the line. The bout will headline a Showtime PPV card.
Mayweather has been a mentor of Davis and he has backed “Tank” for a while. “Money” took to a virtual press conference to express his belief that people are so focused on Davis’ power that they forget his technical prowess (via BoxingScene.com).
“A lot of people don’t know that Tank’s boxing skills is really better than his power. He just didn’t have to use his boxing skills. But Tank can really, really box his ass off. So, when we in the boxing gym … we tell Tank a lot of times, ‘Stop always resorting just to your power and use your boxing skills.’ And that’s what Tank did in this training camp.”
Davis is coming off a 12th-round TKO victory over Yuriorkis Gamboa. “Tank” won the WBA Lightweight gold with that victory. As for Cruz, he last competed back on November 23, 2019. “El Terremoto” captured the WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight Championship with that win.
Davis vs. Santa Cruz will take place inside the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Fans will be allowed in attendance at a reduced capacity. This is the first major boxing world title fight to be held in front of a live crowd during the COVID-19 pandemic.
