Floyd Mayweather Jr’s Potential Opponent Revealed

In early October, boxing fans were teased with rumors that they could potentially see Floyd Mayweather Jr. in yet another exhibition. Reports indicated that Showtime has been targeting December 9th for the PPV event. The rumors for Mayweather’s next exhibition have picked up recently, as it’s now being rumored that Mikey Garcia is the potential opponent that’s being targeted.

Mikey Garcia (40 – 2, 30 KO) last fought in an October 2021 loss to Sandor Martin. If the Mayweather vs Garcia rumors are true, and the Showtime pay-per-view card comes off, it would be in direct competition with the Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis event. Mayweather has made exhibition matchups common practice, having fought six exhibition matchups since mid-2021, having last faced John Gotti III this past June.

While the Mayweather vs Garcia matchup is not confirmed, this is the first potential opponent to leak since the initial reports of Mayweather’s return first circulated. At the time of those initial reports in early October, it was rumored that Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman would be fighting on the undercard in separate bouts, and as it stands, those rumors are sticking strong.

Mikey Garcia would be a huge step up in competition for Mayweather, compared to Gotti III, given that Garcia is a former four-division champion. As exhibitions go, Mayweather can and has done, much worse.
