Floyd Mayweather Jr. has kept his name in the fight sports headline since his retirement, in the MMA world as much as boxing. Mayweather has been tied to a potential fight with MMA’s biggest name Conor McGregor over the past year, but the fight never materialized.
McGregor has continued to bring Mayweather up, despite the retired boxer’s claims that the fight is off the table. According to Mayweather, it’s a smart business strategy for other fighters to mention him.
“I commend these guys for using my name,” Mayweather told FightHype.com. “I remember one particular time I was trying to fight every fighter. All the top names at one particular time and every fighter in boxing was ducking and dodging me.”
“All the guys want what Mayweather got. But you didn’t bust your ass like Mayweather. I sacrificed a lot to get where I got.”
While both McGregor and Mayweather have individually expressed that they want the fight to go down, UFC President Dana White has said that he will not allow it.
According to Mayweather, though, White does not deserve to have a say in the matter. While McGregor makes multi-millions in the UFC, it pales in comparison the amount White makes as the company’s president. Mayweather believes that the fighters should always be making the lion’s share of the money.
“It’s easy for a guy to speak when he’s not in there in a contact sport,” said Mayweather. “It’s easy to get a ton of money off these UFC guys while they’re not really getting paid. And he’s living better than the UFC guys. They say ‘Oh, Floyd is living better than all his fighters,’ well guess what, I was a fighter myself. So I’ll put in the work on both sides.”
