WBA’s top-ranked lightweight contender Floyd Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs) has filed a petition with the sanctioning body to demand an immediate resolution to the vacant lightweight title situation.
The move aims to sideline Gervonta Davis, who currently holds “champion-in-recess” status following domestic violence allegations. Davis hasn’t secured a victory since his eighth-round knockout of Frank Martin on June 15, 2024. His only appearance since then was a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1, 2025.
Following an arrest warrant for charges of battery and false imprisonment in early 2026, the WBA stripped Davis of his active title. However, by naming him “champion-in-recess,” they guaranteed him an immediate title shot upon his return—something Schofield is now challenging.
Schofield’s petition asks the WBA to either order a fight with Davis immediately, or, more likely, to permanently vacate the title so Schofield can fight for it against the next available contender. Schofield Sr. confirmed the petition after suggestions that Tank wants to rematch Isaac Cruz and move up to 140.
“We are, right now, in a petition with the WBA to get the ‘Tank’ Davis fight mandated, because we have been the number one contender for 11 months now and didn’t get a shot. It is like they are skipping over us. Right now, we have got that petition going to find out what the WBA and ‘Tank’ are going to do. They are saying ‘Tank’ wants to go up to 140lbs to fight Pitbull [Isaac Cruz], but that has put us on hold,” Schofield Sr.
