Former UFC And WWE Competitor Matt Riddle Plans 2024 MMA Comeback

Former UFC welterweight competitor and WWE star Matt Riddle has expressed that he is interested in a comeback to MMA this year.

Following his release from the UFC in 2013, which came as a result of testing positive for marijuana on more than one occasion, the season 7 Ultimate Fighter contestant made the jump to professional wresting. Riddle eventually found himself competing in the WWE and more recently Japanese organization New Japan Pro Wrestling.

In a recent appearance on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Riddle expressed that he would love to return to MMA, and even hinted at a possible future bare knuckle boxing bout.

“I got hit up by a couple people [in the fight game],” RIddle said Wednesday on The MMA Hour. “I got hit up by bare-knuckle boxing, and I got hit up by, I believe, someone from PFL, I think it was a Dan Lambert, and he told me to message somebody — or some kind of messages went by and they asked me if I was interested, and I said I’m definitely interested. Just, the fight’s got to be right and the money’s got to be right.

“I haven’t heard back since, but to be fair, I’ve also been wrestling non-stop and doing that, because honestly, when it comes to money, it’s guaranteed money and I show up and it’s there. But I would love to step back in the cage or ring at some point. I want to do it at the end of 2024. I would love to.”

After going 2-1 on The Ultimate Fighter season 7, Riddle fought in the UFC from 2008 until 2013, accumulating 7 wins in 10 fights. Afterward, he had a pair of bouts scheduled in Bellator, and even one in LFA that never came to fruition.

Riddle’s most recent bout came in the form of a submission victory at Titan FC 27 in 2014.

While it seems that Riddle is adamant on a return to active competition later this year, he does display a shred of apprehensiveness, and wants to make sure it is the right opportunity.

“I’ll drop down to middleweight,” Riddle said. “Depends. Depends on who you give me.”

“I mean, maybe give me somebody I can steamroll,” Riddle added with a laugh. “I’m not saying he does a job for me, [but] let me shake off the rust.”
