Former UFC Champion Jon Jones Willing To Sit Out All Of 2021

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones isn’t keen on returning to the Octagon before he’s ready.

Jones and the UFC have been at odds over pay. UFC President Dana White claims Jones wants $30 million guaranteed to challenge Francis Ngannou for the heavyweight gold. Jones has seen payouts for top boxing heavyweights such as Deontay Wilder and he’s vocal about the UFC not matching those numbers.

Jones has made it clear that if he’s to take a risk by moving up to heavyweight, he needs to be paid more. He even took to Twitter to say he’s willing to sit out all of 2021 to ensure he gets the move right.

“Man I’m telling you, I’ve always been the skinny one in my family. Becoming a proper heavyweight is a lot more difficult than I had ever anticipated. I want to do it right the first time.

“Honestly I feel like the only people that it benefits, me jumping in there early are the other heavyweights. The way I’m training, I’m gonna be a real problem this time next year. I’m comfortable enough to wait and that’s exactly what I’ll do.”

Jones hasn’t competed since February 2020. He successfully defended the light heavyweight title for the final time against Dominick Reyes.
