Former World Champ Liam Smith Charged For Alleged Attack

Liam Smith (33-5-1, 20 KOs) has appeared in court charged with grievous bodily harm with intent following an alleged attack on a night concierge at a Manchester apartment building.

Police said the man suffered serious facial injuries during the alleged September 13 incident at The Blade on Silvercroft Street in Deansgate. The alleged victim reportedly suffered fractures and required surgery.

Smith appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court the following day and was released on bail. He is due to appear at Manchester Crown Court on October 19, where he is expected to enter a plea.

Smith has not been convicted of the charge.

The case comes as Smith has been attempting to return to the ring. A planned comeback against Ilaru Kujala in Finland on September 4 fell through after Smith suffered a calf injury.

Smith last fought in April 2025, losing a wide unanimous decision to Aaron McKenna after being dropped in the final round.

The 38-year-old held the WBO light-middleweight title from 2015 to 2016 before losing the championship to Canelo Alvarez.

Grievous bodily harm with intent carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment under Section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. That is the statutory maximum, and any sentence would depend on a conviction and the circumstances established in court.
