Francis Ngannou Speaks On Contract Negotiations With UFC And His Role In An Upcoming Film
Francis Ngannou is the heavyweight champion of the UFC and is considered to be one of the top fighters to face in the organization.
But Ngannou revealed “there’s a lot going on behind the scenes.”
Ngannou (16-3) said he’s been in contract negotiations with the UFC, but he said he needs a new deal and hopes there’s changes going forward.
“Before my last fight, the UFC wanted me to sign some contract and that contract wasn’t right. I didn’t sign that contract and I feel like they weren’t happy about that. I signed a contract before, and it didn’t play out very well on my end,” Ngannou said in a recent interview with GQ.
“So, in order to sign another contract I think it’s my right to at least look out for myself and get what is right for me to fix whatever was the mistake in the previous one. And if someone doesn’t believe they should fix their mistake then that means that person is not looking for anything good for you,” he said.
Ngannou knocked out Stipe Miocic in March to capture the heavyweight title. He was initially supposed to fight Jon Jones, but Jones also couldn’t come to financial terms so the fight was called off.
When Ngannou refused UFC President Dana White’s offer to fight at UFC 265, White held an interim title fight between Ciryl Gane and Derrick Lewis.
Interim title fights are held when the champion cannot defend his title for a long time, which means he hinders the division, but Ngannou won the title just a few months ago, and making an interim title fight seemed unfair to him.
“There’s one thing: if you say you understand the UFC, and how they do business, that means you don’t understand s–t,” Ngannou said. “It’s just like that: it can be very spontaneous, premature, and decisions are out of nowhere. They just pop up like that: boom! But at the end of the day, things will get done. It’s just a matter of time.”
Though it’s unclear when Ngannou’s next fight will be, it seems he has other plans of income – acting.
The fighter will star in the upcoming Jackass film, “Jackass Forever,” he told GQ.
“Speaking of ridiculous ventures, you’re gonna be in Jackass Forever, right? Can you tell me what your scene is gonna be?” the magazine asked.
“Oh! I’m punching somebody in the nuts!” Ngannou answered.
