Francis Ngannou Will Have Knee Surgery Following UFC 270 Win

Francis Ngannou will have to wait until he can train or compete again.

Ngannou’s manager Marquel Martin said that Ngannou must undergo knee surgery. The undisputed heavyweight champion will have procedures done to repair his ACL, which will take about nine months to recover, Martin told ESPN on Wednesday.

After Ngannou’s successful defense against interim champion and ex-sparring partner Ciryl Gane, he revealed that he went into the main event with an injured knee – a torn MCL and damaged ACL — which he sustained during sparring sessions.

During the octagon walk-in, fans immediately noticed that Ngannou was sporting braces on both knees.

The Cameroonian fighter had a medical evaluation in Los Angeles on Monday, but surgery won’t happen yet because he wants to return to his native country. When he returns to the U.S., he will then have the surgery, Martin said.

“I continue to be amazed and inspired by Francis’ heart and resilience,” Martin told ESPN.

“Fighting on one leg to overcome all odds, and remind the world he is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I think we can all agree he deserves some time to go back home and be with his family and countrymen.”

Martin added that, hopefully, during this time Ngannou’s management and the UFC can come to terms for a new contract.

Saturday marked Ngannou’s eighth appearance on an eight-fight contract. With his win, it triggered a champion’s clause, which leaves Ngannou under contract for either three fights or one year.

But the champion’s made it clear that he has new demands for his contract, including an option to box and a new guaranteed fight pay-out. He’s also said that he doesn’t feel like he’s been treated fairly by the UFC.

“We’d like to thank all the fans for their continued support and belief in Francis,” Martin said.
