Frank Bruno Wins First Heavyweight Title – This Day In Boxing History (September 9, 1995)

Over 20 years ago, Frank Bruno earned his first world title.

After numerous failed world title bids, Bruno defeated Oliver McCall by unanimous decision at the Royal Oak Gym in Canning Town.

Bruno started fast. But McCall was able to sneak in a few punches of his own, bruising Bruno’s eye early in the second round.

McCall was close to overcoming Bruno towards the end of the fight, but Bruno was able to regain control and held onto to it to keep his lead on the scorecards.

McCall fought with urgency, but it wasn’t enough to declare himself the winner.
