Frank Martin Rallies To Get A Close Unanimous Decision Victory Over Artem Harutyunyan

Frank Martin overcame Artem Harutyunyan to secure a close unanimous-decision win in a WBC lightweight title eliminator.

Martin started off slow, as the challenger made a positive impression in the earlier rounds with his right hand, as the American’s inactivity showed.

However, Martin’s significant power advantage was the equaliser as he worked his way back into the bout with a sweet right hand counter in the second.

Martin stepped on the gas in the sixth, as he caught Harutyunyan’s attention with a left to the body.

And as the round progressed, his shots hurt the German. A total of 30 shots landed, as Martin stalked his opponent around the ring.

As the fight progressed, Harutyunyan’s eye became damaged but the challenger continued to stay in the fight.

A right hand to the body slowed down Martin, showing that the challenger was still there to win.

Realizing that things were close, Martin stepped on the gas in the championship rounds.

In the eleventh round, Martin unleashed a flurry of combinations, hurting Harutyunyan’s eye further.

And in the final round, Martin chased his opponent to try and secure a stoppage. A crucial knockdown followed as Harutyunyan took a knee following some sustained attacks to the body.

And that late pressure proved crucial on the scorecards: 114-113, 115-112 and 115-112.

Reaction

“He [Harutyunyan] definitely tough. I hit him with some big shots, he stood up, he bounced around the ring like a ping pong, but, you know, he stood tall. I take my hat off to hum because he took some big shots,” Martin
