Freddie Roach: I Would Like To See Manny Pacquiao vs. Ryan Garcia
Renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach wants to see Manny Pacquiao and Ryan Garcia trade leather.
Roach trains Pacquiao ahead of his bouts. The two split following Pacquiao’s controversial decision loss to Jeff Horn back in July 2017. Just 16 months later, the two reunited. Roach was in Pacquiao’s corner for his successful WBA (Regular) Welterweight Title defense over Adrien Broner as well as his WBA (Super) Title win against Keith Thurman.
Pacquiao hasn’t competed since July 2019 but Roach isn’t worried about ring rust. He told the folks at Fight Hype that Pacquiao has been training during his time away from the ring (h/t Boxing Insider).
“I know he trains all the time. He sends me tapes all the time. It’s not like he’s training just for this fight.”
As far as the rumors of a clash between Pacquiao and Garcia are concerned, Roach said it’s an intriguing fight.
“The Garcia fight? I really like that fight…Manny’s got to be careful with him a little bit and be smart…I would like to see it.
“I’d like to go with Ryan first. There’s certain guys get older, they get a little slower and so forth. I think it will be a great fight (for Pacquiao) to get ready for them. He comes to my gym a lot. He’s a good fighter. We definitely have to be in the best shape to beat him.”
Golden Boy Promotions has denied that there’s any weight to a matchup between Pacquiao and Garcia. “PacMan” has expressed interest in fighting WBO Welterweight Champion Terence Crawford for the right price.
