Fury May Take Canelo’s September Date

Mexico Independence day has been one of the biggest fight dates of the year, especially for Canelo Alvarez, who has taken residency on that date in Las Vegas for the past few years.

With Alvarez postponing his next fight due to a lack of an opponent, some have wondered what can fill that spot in Las Vegas… It seems that the Gypsy King will look to make camp in Sin City on September 14th.

Fury, who made his Las Vegas debut earlier this year in a starching of Tom Schwarz, is rumored to be setting his return fight on that date.

Initially reported by Boxing Scene, Fury is looking at locking down September 14th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena or the very next Saturday night, fighting inside TD Garden on September 21st.

The decision can come by Friday, as the MGM is weighing a Fury return against a potential WBO junior middleweight championship fight between champion Jaime Munguia and Jessie Vargas, which would see Golden Boy partnering with Matchroom Boxing, rivals to Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren.

Fury’s co-promoter, Bob Arum, had planned for Fury to return in October inside Madison Square Garden, but Fury has decided he wants to fight earlier, setting up a Boston debut or a Las Vegas return.

With a win Fury finally sets the stage for a highly anticipated rematch against WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, who defends against Luis Ortiz later this year.
