Fury, Velasquez Appear on WWE Smackdown Fox Premiere

The WWE made its FOX debut on October 4, but it wasn’t without a presence from two key members of the boxing and MMA worlds.

A list of big names across sports and entertainment were present for the first-ever Friday Night Smackdown on FOX, but the biggest impacts were made by lineal heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury and former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

During a tag team match, WWE superstar Braun Strowman posed off with Fury before sending a competitor into his direction. Following Strowman’s pin to win the match, Fury had to be held back by security from entering the ring area.

This appears to be a storyline to promote Fury and his possible upcoming rematch with Deontay Wilder, and not a one-time thing or “shoot” (i.e. real) encounter, as Fury is scheduled to be at the WWE’s Monday Night Raw program on October 7.

Later on in the night, former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar regained the WWE championship in lightning-quick fashion, but his celebration was cut short by fellow superstar Rey Mysterio, who had a surprise for Lesnar and the WWE audience in Velasquez, who defeated Lesnar for the UFC heavyweight title in 2010.

Velasquez stormed the ring and attacked Lesnar before Lesnar got out of dodge.

UPDATE: Dave Meltzer of MMA Fighting and the Wrestling Observer is now reporting that Lesnar and Velasquez will face off for Lesnar’s newly won title on October 31 at WWE’s Crown Jewel event.
