Fury-Wallin A Possible WBC Title Fight
The WBC likes making belts for special occasions, especially for the major Mexican holidays, Cinco De Mayo and Mexican Independence Day in September.
For this September 14th, the WBC is reviving its Mayan title, last seen on May 4th when Canelo Alvarez defeated Daniel Jacobs, but with Alvarez on the bench until later this year, four other fights are in-play for the handcrafted title.
The first and most prominent is Tyson Fury’s return to Las Vegas against unproven Swedish heavyweight Otto Wallin. Fury fought for the proper WBC world heavyweight title last December in a controversial draw against Deontay Wilder.
With the interim status and mandatory challenger title in limbo following Dillian Whyte’s drug test failure last month, this may be a road the WBC takes to help further a Wilder-Fury sequel in early 2020.
The other three fights in-play on September 14th are
- Devin Haney vs. Zaur Abdullaev
- Jaime Munguia vs. Patrick Allotey
- Franchon Crews-Dezurn vs. Alejandra Jimenez
