Gadelha-Rodriguez Booked For UFC Oklahoma City
Three-time BJJ World Champion Claudia Gadelha will have to wait just a few more months until her next fight. The UFC announced the Brazilian will face off against Marina Rodriguez on May 2 at UFC Fight Night 174. It is one of the first official fights booked for card taking place inside the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Gadelha (17-4) was supposed to face Alexa Grasso at UFC 246 back in January. Grasso (11-3) came in 5.5 pounds over the weight limit, which is about 115. The Nevada State Athletic Commission threw out the fight altogether instead of giving Gadelha another opponent to face. Claudia discredited Grasso’s commitment to the fight, seeing how there was no warning from her that she was going to miss weight by a steep amount.
“The whole thing was the commission, right?” Claudia stated to MMA Junkie. “Because in the strawweight division we couldn’t be more than three pounds heavier than each other. If she had communicated with us the day before, or even the morning of (the weigh-ins), even before we jumped on the scale, I would have just had a drink or something and we would have been the same weight. That’s where my frustration was, because we couldn’t make it happen. But I don’t think she wanted to fight. I think she didn’t feel good and she didn’t want to fight, so I hope if that happens again with any other fighter, they communicate and they find a way to try to make the fight happen.”
Gadelha is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Randa Markos at UFC 239 back in July. She is 2-2 in her last four fights and 5-2 in her last seven.
The 32-year-old Marina Rodriguez (12-0-2) is coming off of a majority decision draw against Cynthia Calvillo in December. Calvillo missed weight for her fight as well. Rodriguez is 2-0-2 in her last fought fights, as she drew with Markos back in 2018. Her two wins between those draws come against Jessica Aguilar and Tecia Torres, both via unanimous decision
