Garbrandt-Assuncao Reportedly Rescheduled For June 6
The bantamweight return of Cody Garbrandt will look to kick things off for the UFC in June. MMA Fighting is reporting that Garbrandt’s original bout with Raphael Assuncao will be taking place on June 6. The fight has yet to be confirmed by the UFC, and the date can change.
Garbrandt (11-3) is on a three-fight losing streak dating back to 2017. He defeated Dominick Cruz for the UFC Bantamweight Title at UFC 207 but dropped it in his first defense to T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 217. Garbrandt lost the rematch to Dillashaw and was knocked out by Pedro Munhoz at UFC 235 in March.
Assuncao (27-7) is on a two-fight skid. His last win a 2018 affair against Rob Font, the 37-year-old lost to Marlon Moraes and Cory Sandhagen in 2019.
Both were supposed to face off against one another at UFC Columbus on March 28. Garbrandt had to back out of the event due to kidney issues, stating he felt some inflammation in the lymph nodes of his groin. The event was then taken off of the schedule altogether due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This may be the last bout at bantamweight for Garbrandt, as he has been teasing a move to flyweight for a while. The location for the June 6 event is unknown, but one area in mind has been Jacksonville, where the UFC is hosting several events in May.
